Understand any picture with text in it
Travelling, shopping from abroad or reading a screenshot in another language? Add the picture and choose your language: the AI reads the text in the image, in reading order, and translates it.
You see the original text and the translation side by side, so you can copy either one or download both in a text file. It copes with photos taken at a slight angle, reasonably clear handwriting and images that mix more than one language.
The image is shrunk in your browser before it's sent, which keeps it quick even on mobile data. Paste a screenshot straight from your clipboard with Ctrl+V.
How to use it
- 1Upload, drop or paste (Ctrl+V) an image with text.
- 2Choose the language to translate into.
- 3Click Translate Image Text.
- 4Copy the translation or download both texts.
Good uses for image translation
- Menus, street signs, product labels and instructions while travelling.
- Screenshots of messages, posts or app screens in another language.
- Packaging and ingredient lists on products bought online.
- Photographed letters or notices, to understand them before getting a professional translation.
How it works
Your browser shrinks the picture so its longest side is at most 1,600 pixels and turns it into a compact JPEG. That copy goes to our server and on to our AI provider, which reads the text and returns it together with a translation into one of 36 languages. Nothing is saved after the answer comes back.
Because a language model reads the text, it understands context better than letter-by-letter OCR, but it can still misread small, blurred or stylised writing.
Tips and limits
- Fill the frame with the text and keep the photo sharp and well lit.
- For long documents, translate one page per image, or use Translate PDF for PDF files.
- Machine translation is a guide: for legal, medical or official documents, use a qualified translator.
- Images up to 30 MB can be chosen; they are reduced before sending.
- If you only need the text, not a translation, Image to Text reads it on your device without sending it anywhere.
Reading the result
The text found in the image is shown next to its translation, so you can check that nothing was missed before you rely on it. Right-to-left languages such as Urdu, Arabic and Persian are shown right to left.
Both boxes have a copy button, and the download saves the original and the translation together in one .txt file. If part of the picture was cut off or blurry, that text may be missing from both, so retake the photo rather than guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my image uploaded?
Yes, for this AI tool: the image is shrunk in your browser and sent to our server and on to our AI provider to read it. It isn't stored, and it isn't used to train AI models by us. Don't use it for images you aren't allowed to share with a third party.
Is it free? Are there limits?
Yes, it's free with 15 AI image requests per visitor per day, shared between Translate Image and the AI Image Describer, so the service stays available for everyone. The count resets daily.
Can it read handwriting?
Clear handwriting usually works. Very messy handwriting, tiny text or blurry photos may be read incorrectly, so take a sharp, well-lit photo when you can.
Which languages can it translate into?
36 languages, including English, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Persian, Turkish, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The text in the image can be in many languages, including mixed ones.
How accurate is the translation?
It's good for understanding everyday text such as signs, menus and messages. Like all machine translation it can miss nuance, names and specialist terms, so double-check anything important.
Can I translate a whole PDF instead?
Yes, use Translate PDF. It reads the text of each page in your browser and translates it page by page.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Take a photo or choose one from your gallery; the page shrinks it before sending so it works on mobile data too.
