XML Sitemap Generator

Paste a list of page addresses, or pull the links from one page of your site, and get a sitemap.xml that follows the sitemaps.org format. Set the date and the optional tags, then copy or download the file.

Collect links from a page

Enter a page address and we'll add every link on it that points to the same host. Our server fetches that one page for you; nothing is stored.

Full addresses starting with http:// or https://. Blank lines and repeats are skipped.

Options

Last modified (lastmod)

The same values go on every URL. Google ignores changefreq and priority, so leaving them out is fine.

These aren't full http(s) addresses, contain spaces, or are longer than 2,047 characters, so they were left out.

Your list stays here

Pasted URLs are turned into XML in your browser and never sent to us.

Valid XML

Uses the sitemaps.org namespace, with every address escaped.

Checks as you type

Counts URLs, flags bad lines and warns past 50,000 URLs or 50 MB.

A sitemap is just a list, written carefully

An XML sitemap tells search engines which pages on your site you'd like them to know about. It doesn't force anything into the index, but it helps crawlers find pages that few links point to, such as new blog posts or products deep in a category. The file itself is simple: a <urlset> element with one <url> entry per page, each holding a <loc> with the full address and, if you want, a last-modified date.

The fiddly part is getting the details right. An ampersand in a query string has to be written as &amp;, every address has to be absolute, and one stray space can make a line useless. This generator handles that for you. It reads one address per line, skips blank lines and repeats, lists anything that isn't a proper http or https address, and escapes the rest before writing the XML.

If you don't have a list yet, the Collect links box can start one. Give it a page, usually your homepage or a category page, and it adds the links on that page that stay on the same host.

How to use it

  1. 1Paste your page addresses into the box, one per line, or open a .txt file.
  2. 2Optionally enter a page address under Collect links to add the links found on it.
  3. 3Choose the lastmod date (today, a date you pick, or none) and, if you want them, changefreq and priority.
  4. 4Check the URL count and the list of skipped lines, then fix anything that should have been included.
  5. 5Copy the XML or download it as sitemap.xml and upload it to the root of your site.

What ends up in the file

  • The XML declaration and a <urlset> using the sitemaps.org 0.9 namespace.
  • One <url> per unique address, with <loc> escaped so &, <, >, quotes and apostrophes are safe.
  • <lastmod> as a YYYY-MM-DD date. "Today" uses your device's clock, and a picked date goes on every URL.
  • <changefreq> (always, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or never) and <priority> (0.0 to 1.0), only if you choose a value.
  • Addresses are cleaned up the way your browser would: the host is lowercased and characters such as accented letters are percent-encoded. A bare domain gets its trailing slash.

How Collect links works

When you press Collect links, the address you typed goes to our server, which fetches that one page and sends its HTML back to your browser. Nothing is saved on our side, and it's limited to 20 requests a minute so it can't be abused. Your browser then reads every link on the page, turns relative links like /about into full addresses, and keeps only those on the same host. Fragments such as #reviews are removed, and mailto:, tel: and javascript: links are dropped. The page address itself is added as well.

Only that one page is read. It isn't a crawler, so to cover a bigger site, collect from a few hub pages, such as the homepage, the blog index and the main category pages. Pages larger than 1 MB are only read up to their first 1 MB. Note that www.example.com and example.com count as different hosts.

If the address points to an existing sitemap, the <loc> entries in it are collected instead. You can also paste sitemap XML straight into the box, and the tool will read the addresses out of it, which is a quick way to rebuild an old file with a fresh date.

Limits worth knowing

One sitemap file can hold up to 50,000 URLs and must be no bigger than 50 MB uncompressed. The tool shows a warning when your list goes over either limit. In that case, split the list into several files and list them in a sitemap index. Each address also has to be under 2,048 characters, so longer ones are listed as skipped.

Google says it ignores changefreq and priority, and only uses lastmod when the date is consistently accurate. So setting every page to today's date each time you regenerate isn't a great habit. Use it when the pages really did change, or leave the date out.

After you download it

Upload sitemap.xml to the root of your site so it's reachable at an address like https://example.com/sitemap.xml. Then add a Sitemap: line with that full address to your robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

A sitemap should only list pages you want found: the canonical version of each page, ones that return a 200 status and aren't marked noindex. Leave out redirects, login pages and thank-you pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an XML sitemap at all?

Small sites with good internal links are often found fine without one. A sitemap helps most on new sites with few backlinks, large sites, and sites where some pages are hard to reach through links. It costs little to have one.

Does this tool crawl my whole website?

No. Collect links reads a single page and adds the same-host links on it. For a full crawl you'd need a desktop crawler or your CMS's built-in sitemap. You can run Collect links on several pages one after another, and new addresses are added to the list without repeats.

Why were some of my lines skipped?

Each line must be a complete address starting with http:// or https://, with no spaces inside and fewer than 2,048 characters. A line like www.example.com/blog is skipped because it has no scheme. The skipped lines are listed with their line numbers so you can fix them.

What date should I use for lastmod?

The date the page's main content last changed. If you're building the file right after updating everything, Today is fine. Otherwise pick a date or leave it out. Search engines learn to ignore lastmod on sites where it's always the current date.

Are the URLs I paste sent anywhere?

No. The list and the XML are handled in your browser. The only thing that reaches our server is the single page address you enter under Collect links, so the server can fetch that page. It isn't stored.

Can I make a sitemap index or a gzipped file?

Not with this tool. It writes one plain sitemap.xml. If you have more than 50,000 URLs, split the list, create a file for each part, and write a small index file that points to them.

Where do I tell Google about my sitemap?

Submit the address in Google Search Console under Sitemaps, and add a line such as Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml to your robots.txt so other search engines can find it too.
