Compress a PDF

Make a PDF small enough to email or upload. Images are re-compressed and the file structure is tidied, while text stays sharp and selectable.

Text stays sharp

Light, Recommended and Strong keep text selectable and crisp.

Smaller PDFs without blurry text

Most of a PDF's size comes from the photos and scans inside it. The compressor re-encodes those images at a lower quality and, when they are much larger than they appear on the page, at a lower resolution. Text and vector graphics are left as they are, so they stay sharp at any zoom.

Recommended is a good balance for most documents. Strong gives the smallest files that are still comfortable to read. For scans that are still too big, Extreme turns every page into a compressed picture, which gives the smallest result but removes selectable text.

You see the old and new size before you download, and if a level doesn't make the file smaller, the tool tells you instead of giving you a bigger file.

How to use it

  1. 1Upload your PDF.
  2. 2Choose Light, Recommended, Strong or Extreme.
  3. 3Click Compress and compare the sizes.
  4. 4Download the smaller PDF.

Compression levels explained

  • Light: lossless clean-up. Removes duplicate data, unused objects and page thumbnails; quality is unchanged.
  • Recommended: images re-saved as JPEG at about 75% quality and at most about 150 DPI for the size they're shown at.
  • Strong: about 55% quality and 110 DPI, for upload limits and long emails.
  • Extreme: each page becomes a compressed picture. Smallest, but text is no longer selectable or searchable.

What makes a PDF big

Phone photos and scans are often stored at several thousand pixels across, even when they fill only part of a page. Re-sizing them to match how they are shown is where most of the saving comes from, which is why photo-heavy PDFs often shrink by more than half while text-only files change little.

What it leaves alone

  • Images stored in CMYK colour, palette images and image masks are left unchanged.
  • Fonts are not subset, so text-only PDFs may not get much smaller.
  • Password-protected PDFs need their password removed first. Extreme still works on files that only have restrictions.
  • Files up to 300 MB, depending on your device's memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser tab using JavaScript. Your files never leave your device, and closing the tab discards them.

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on the content. PDFs with photos or scans often shrink by half or more. PDFs that are mostly text are already small and may only shrink a little.

Will the text still be selectable?

Yes, with Light, Recommended and Strong. Only Extreme turns pages into pictures, so the text can no longer be selected or searched.

Which level should I use for email?

Start with Recommended. If the file is still too large for the attachment limit, try Strong, and use Extreme only for scans where selectable text doesn't matter.

Why didn't my file get smaller?

Text-only PDFs and files that were already optimised have little left to remove. The tool shows a message instead of a larger file. Try a stronger level, or check whether the size comes from fonts rather than images.

Does compressing change how the PDF looks?

Text, shapes and layout stay the same. Photos may look slightly softer at Strong when zoomed in closely; at normal viewing size the difference is hard to see.

Can I compress a scanned PDF?

Scans usually shrink a lot, because each page is a large image. Try Recommended first. If it's still too big, Extreme turns each page into a compact picture, which makes the most difference for scans.
