Turning an emoji into a favicon

An emoji is the fastest way to give a side project, prototype or internal tool a recognisable tab icon. It needs no design work, and most people recognise it at a glance even at 16 pixels.

Emoji look different on every operating system: Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung each draw their own artwork. If you reference an emoji directly in an SVG, each visitor sees their own platform's version. This tool draws the emoji once in your browser and saves it as PNG and ICO files, so those files look the same everywhere. The emoji is drawn with your device's emoji font.

Pick emoji with a simple, bold shape. Detailed ones such as flags or multi-person emoji turn into noise at favicon size.

How to use it

  1. 1Choose an emoji from the quick picker or paste any emoji into the input.
  2. 2Add a background tile and adjust the padding so the emoji fills the icon.
  3. 3Check the 16 px browser tab and the iOS and Android previews.
  4. 4Download the bundle with ICO, PNG, SVG, the Apple touch icon and the web manifest.

Modern Icon Packages vs. ICO/PNG-Only Converters

Web standards have evolved. A single fixed-size PNG or ICO looks soft on high-density screens and can disappear on dark browser tabs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are emoji favicons supported on all devices?

Yes, our tool rasterizes the emoji into crisp PNG and ICO assets for legacy browsers while also creating a vector SVG for modern browsers.

Is it legal to use emoji as a favicon?

Emoji characters are a Unicode standard, but the artwork belongs to each platform vendor. For a commercial brand, consider using the emoji only as a placeholder until you have your own mark.

Why does my emoji look different from the preview on another computer?

The PNG and ICO files are drawn with the emoji font of the device that generated them. Generate on the platform whose emoji style you prefer.
