OCR PDF: Make Scanned PDFs Searchable

Scanned documents are pictures of text, so you can't search, select or copy anything. OCR reads the words and adds an invisible text layer, so the PDF looks the same but becomes searchable.

Text recognition that runs on your own device

Optical character recognition (OCR) looks at each page image and works out the letters and words on it. This tool uses Tesseract, the open-source OCR engine originally developed at HP and later maintained by Google, running inside your browser tab rather than on a server.

The recognised text is placed invisibly over each page in the position of the words. The pages look exactly as before, but Ctrl+F finds words, you can select and copy text, and search tools can read the file. Pages that already contain real text are skipped by default, so mixed documents are handled quickly.

Choose every language in the document, such as English and Urdu together. The first time you use a language, its data (roughly 1 to 3 MB) downloads from our own server, not a third party, and your browser keeps it for next time. Accuracy depends on the scan: sharp, straight pages give the cleanest results, while handwriting and very faint or skewed scans give poorer results.

How to use it

  1. 1Upload a scanned PDF.
  2. 2Choose the language or languages of the text, the quality and the pages.
  3. 3Click Make Searchable & Download and wait while each page is read.
  4. 4Open the new PDF and search or copy the text, or copy the text straight from the preview.

When you need OCR

  • Searching a scanned contract, statement or book for a word or number.
  • Copying text out of a scan instead of retyping it.
  • Preparing scans for tools that need real text, such as PDF to Word, Translate PDF or the AI PDF Summarizer.
  • Making archives of old paper documents findable on your computer.
  • Copying figures out of scanned invoices or statements into a spreadsheet.

Options explained

Standard quality reads each page at 200 DPI, which is faster and fine for normal printed text. High quality reads at 300 DPI and helps with small print, footnotes and dense tables, at the cost of more time.

You can combine up to three languages for documents that mix them. Choose all pages or a range, and leave "skip pages that already have text" on so digital pages in a mixed file aren't processed again.

Tips for better accuracy

  • Pick only the languages that are really in the document; extra languages can cause mistakes.
  • Use High quality for small or thin fonts.
  • Straighten and clean up photographed pages first with Scan to PDF.
  • Check the confidence shown for each page and proofread the low ones.
  • Make sure pages are the right way up; OCR reads rotated pages as given by the PDF.

Privacy and limits

The PDF is read on your own device; neither the file nor the recognised text is sent anywhere. Only the OCR engine and language data are downloaded, from this website. Each page takes a few seconds depending on your device, and Cancel stops the job at any time. PDFs that block changes need to be unlocked with Unlock PDF first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser tab using JavaScript. Your files never leave your device, and closing the tab discards them.

Which languages can it read?

English, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Turkish and Indonesian. You can combine up to three languages for documents that mix them.

Will the PDF look different after OCR?

No. The original pages are kept as they are and an invisible text layer is added on top, so the file looks the same but becomes searchable and copyable.

How accurate is the OCR?

Printed text in a clean scan is usually recognised well. Blurry photos, skewed pages, unusual fonts and handwriting reduce accuracy. The tool shows a confidence score for each page so you can check the weak ones; High quality (300 DPI) helps with small print.

Why does the first run take longer?

The OCR engine and the language data download from this website the first time, then stay cached in your browser, so later runs start sooner. Each page then takes a few seconds to read, depending on your device.

Can it read handwriting?

Only neat, printed-style handwriting, and even then with mistakes. Tesseract is designed for printed text, so expect to correct handwritten passages by hand.

Why is copied Urdu or Arabic text reversed in some viewers?

Right-to-left words are stored in the standard way for OCR text layers. Most PDF readers copy them correctly, but some browser-based viewers return the letters of each word in reverse order. Opening the file in a desktop PDF reader avoids this.
