Words for every picture

Alt text helps people who use screen readers understand your images, and helps search engines understand them too. Writing it for every image is slow: Alt text mode writes one concise sentence of up to 125 characters for you.

Choose Description for a fuller summary of the scene, setting, colours, mood and any visible text, useful for captions, product listings and accessibility notes. People are described by what they're doing, never identified by name. Objects & text lists what's in the picture, copies its visible text and names the main colours.

Results can be written in 36 languages. The image is shrunk in your browser before it's sent to our AI provider.

How to use it

  1. 1Upload, drop or paste (Ctrl+V) an image.
  2. 2Choose Description, Alt text or Objects & text, and a language.
  3. 3Click Describe Image.
  4. 4Copy the result or download it.

Which mode should I use?

  • Alt text: one sentence for the alt attribute of an image on your website or in your CMS.
  • Description: a short summary followed by paragraphs, for captions, listings, reports or accessibility notes.
  • Objects & text: a quick inventory of objects, the exact text visible in the image, and its main colours.

Writing alt text that helps

Good alt text says what the image shows and why it's on the page, in plain words. Treat the AI's sentence as a draft: add context only you know, such as a product name or the person's role, and keep it short. Purely decorative images should have an empty alt attribute instead.

Accurate alt text improves accessibility and helps search engines understand your images; it doesn't replace useful text on the page itself.

Limits and privacy

  • The AI can misjudge small details, numbers and text in blurry images, so review the result before publishing.
  • It doesn't identify real people from their faces.
  • The image is reduced to at most 1,600 pixels and sent to our AI provider only to produce the answer; it isn't stored.
  • 15 AI image requests per visitor per day, shared with Translate Image.

What each mode gives you (example)

For a photo of a brown leather backpack on a café table, Alt text mode would give something like "Brown leather backpack with brass buckles on a wooden café table". Description mode starts with a one-line summary and then covers the bag, the setting, lighting and colours in a few short paragraphs.

Objects & text mode returns three headed lists: the objects it can see (backpack, table, coffee cup), any text exactly as written (a brand name on a tag, for example), and the main colours. These are illustrations of the format; real results depend on your image.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my image uploaded?

Yes, for this AI tool: the image is shrunk in your browser and sent to our server and on to our AI provider to read it. It isn't stored, and it isn't used to train AI models by us. Don't use it for images you aren't allowed to share with a third party.

Is it free? Are there limits?

Yes, it's free with 15 AI image requests per visitor per day, shared between Translate Image and the AI Image Describer, so the service stays available for everyone. The count resets daily.

What makes good alt text?

Short and specific: say what the image shows and why it matters on the page, in one sentence, without "image of". Decorative images that add nothing should have an empty alt attribute instead.

Can it recognise people?

It describes people by what is visible, such as clothing, actions and setting, but it never names real people from their faces. If a name matters, add it to the text yourself.

Does it read text inside the image?

Yes. Objects & text mode copies the visible text exactly as written, and Description mentions important text too. To extract text without using AI, try Image to Text, which runs on your device.

Can I use the descriptions on my website?

Yes, the text is yours to use. Review it first: the AI can be wrong about details, and you know the context of your page better than it does.

Which image types can I use?

Common photo and graphic formats such as JPG, PNG and WebP, up to 30 MB. Large images are reduced in your browser before they're sent.
