Five looks, one simple tool

Grayscale converts each pixel using how bright it looks to the eye, so skies and skin keep natural tones. Desaturate gives a flatter, even gray. Sepia adds the warm brown of old prints, and Duotone maps dark and light areas to two colours you pick, a popular style for posters and website headers.

Black & white turns every pixel pure black or pure white. Move the threshold slider until text and lines are crisp: it is ideal for cleaning up scanned forms, photographed notes and signatures before you put them in a document.

Brightness and contrast sliders fine-tune every mode, and the before/after slider lets you compare with the original. Transparent areas stay transparent in PNG and WebP output.

How to use it

  1. 1Add up to 50 images, or paste one with Ctrl+V.
  2. 2Pick Grayscale, Desaturate, Sepia, Black & white or Duotone.
  3. 3Adjust brightness and contrast, and the threshold for black & white.
  4. 4Download the result, or all images as a ZIP.

Which mode should I use?

  • Grayscale: natural-looking black and white photos for portraits, landscapes and print.
  • Desaturate: an even, flat gray when you want less contrast between colours.
  • Sepia: a warm vintage tone for old-style photos and invitations.
  • Black & white: pure black and white for scans, notes, stamps and signatures.
  • Duotone: two chosen colours for bold graphics and banners.

Getting a clean signature or scan

Photograph the signature on plain white paper in good light. Choose Black & white, then move the threshold until the paper is completely white and the ink is solid black. A little extra contrast helps faint pencil or ballpoint lines. Save as PNG to keep the edges sharp; for a transparent background, crop it first and then remove the white with the Image Resizer & BG Remover.

Output and quality

Save in the same format as each original, or choose PNG, JPG or WebP for all. JPG and WebP have a quality slider (default 92%); PNG is lossless. As a side effect, camera details and location tags from the original don't end up in the new file. Animated GIFs are converted from their first frame.

Making black and white look good

Colour photos often look flat once the colour is gone, because a red jumper and a green hedge can end up the same gray. Add a little contrast (around +10 to +20) to bring back the separation, and use brightness sparingly so whites don't turn into blank areas.

Sepia works well on old family portraits and wedding-style shots. For duotone, pick a very dark colour and a light one, such as navy and pale yellow; two colours of similar brightness make the picture hard to read.

Printing in gray? Many printers still mix colour inks to make gray, so also choose the grayscale or black-ink-only option in your printer settings if you want to save colour ink.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser tab. Your images never leave your device, and closing the tab discards them.

What's the difference between grayscale and black & white?

Grayscale keeps every shade from black to white, like a classic black and white photo. Black & white uses only pure black and pure white, which suits documents and signatures.

Will transparent backgrounds stay transparent?

Yes, when you save as PNG or WebP. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white.

Can I undo the effect later?

The colour information is removed from the new file, so keep your original. Your original file is never changed; the tool always creates a new download.

Can I do a whole folder of photos?

You can add 50 at a time and they all get the same settings. They come back together in one ZIP.

Can I make a black and white PDF instead?

Yes, use Grayscale PDF, which converts the colours inside a PDF and keeps the text selectable.

Do I need an account?

No. Open the page, drop your images in and download. It's free and nothing gets added to your pictures.
