View and Remove Photo Metadata

Photos can carry where they were taken, the camera's serial number and your name. See exactly what's inside, then remove it before you post or send your pictures.

Step 1

Photos

Click, drop or paste (Ctrl+V) photos
JPG, PNG and WebP. Read in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Step 2

Rotation

Phone photos often rely on a rotation flag

None of your photos use a rotation flag, so every option gives the same lossless result.

Step 3

Download

EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC, comments and thumbnails are removed. Colour profiles are kept so colours stay the same.

Cleaned locally

Photos are checked and cleaned on your device, not on a server.

No re-compression

Metadata blocks are cut out, so the picture stays identical.

See it first

GPS, serial numbers and names are highlighted before you clean.

What your photos say about you

Most phones and cameras save extra information inside every photo: the date, camera and lens, settings, often the exact GPS position, and sometimes the owner's name or the camera's serial number. Anyone who gets the original file can read it.

This tool reads EXIF, XMP, IPTC, comments and PNG text data and lists everything it finds. Personal items such as location, serial numbers and names are highlighted, and when a photo has a GPS position you get a link to see the spot on a map, so you know what you're about to share.

Removing the data doesn't re-compress your photo: JPG, PNG and WebP files are cleaned by cutting out the metadata blocks, so the picture stays exactly the same and colour profiles are kept.

How to use it

  1. 1Add up to 100 of your photos (JPG, PNG or WebP).
  2. 2Review what each photo contains; personal items are shown in red.
  3. 3Choose how to handle the rotation setting.
  4. 4Download each clean photo, or all of them as a ZIP.

When to clean a photo

Some large social networks remove location when you upload, but many sites, email and messaging apps that send files as documents keep the original.

  • A holiday photo from your phone usually has the exact GPS spot in it. Clean it before posting while you're still away.
  • Before selling something online, so the photo doesn't reveal your home address through GPS.
  • Before posting in forums, groups or chats that don't remove metadata themselves.
  • Before sending pictures for work, where the camera owner name or software details aren't needed.
  • When sharing photos of your children, home or travel plans.

The rotation options explained

  • Keep rotation (recommended): removes everything except the small setting that tells apps which way up the photo is. Lossless.
  • Rotate the pixels: turns the picture upright and removes all metadata, re-saving the JPG at 95% quality.
  • Remove everything: lossless and complete, but some photos may then appear sideways in apps that relied on the rotation setting.

What it can't do

Only JPG, PNG and WebP files can be cleaned here. Other formats are listed but not changed; convert them with the Image Converter, which never copies metadata. Removing metadata doesn't hide what is visible in the picture itself, such as street signs or house numbers, so check the image too.

What a typical phone photo contains

A photo straight from a modern phone usually holds the date and time to the second, the phone make and model, lens and exposure settings, the software version, and, if location was switched on, the latitude, longitude, altitude and even the direction the camera was facing. Photos edited in desktop apps can also carry the editor's name and a history of the software used.

None of this is visible when you look at the picture, which is exactly why it's easy to share by accident. The list on this page shows every field we can read, with personal ones marked in red.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser tab. Your images never leave your device, and closing the tab discards them.

What is EXIF data?

EXIF is information a camera or phone saves inside a photo: date and time, camera model, lens and settings, and often the GPS location where it was taken. XMP and IPTC are similar blocks added by editing apps and photo agencies.

Does removing metadata reduce quality?

No. JPG, PNG and WebP files are cleaned without re-compressing the image, so every pixel stays the same. Only the "Rotate the pixels" option re-saves the JPG, at 95% quality.

Why does my photo appear sideways after cleaning?

Phones often store photos sideways with a setting that tells apps to rotate them. Choose "Keep rotation" to keep just that setting, or "Rotate the pixels" to turn the picture upright before removing everything.

Are colour profiles removed?

No. ICC colour profiles are kept so colours look the same after cleaning. They don't contain personal information.

Can I clean a whole album?

Up to 100 photos per go. For a bigger album, do it in a couple of batches; each batch downloads as a ZIP.

Is it free?

Yes, free and without an account. Clean one photo or a hundred, as often as you need.
