Placeholder text that looks like the real thing
Designers use lorem ipsum because it has the rhythm of real writing without anything worth reading. Short and long words, sentences of different lengths and the odd comma make a layout look the way it will with real copy, while nobody gets distracted by what the text says. Use it in wireframes, email templates, CMS themes and test pages before the final words are ready.
Pick what you need. Paragraphs gives blocks of 4 to 8 sentences. Sentences gives a run of 6 to 14 word sentences in one block. Words is useful when a field has a strict length, like a 50-word product summary. List items gives short 3 to 8 word lines for menus and bullet lists.
Front-end developers can switch on HTML and paste the output straight into a template, with every paragraph already in its <p> tag or every item in an <li>. The word and character counters under the result help when a design has fixed limits, such as a card that fits about 150 characters.
How to use it
- 1Choose paragraphs, sentences, words or list items.
- 2Enter how many you need.
- 3Decide whether it should start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" and whether to wrap it in HTML.
- 4Press New text for a different version, then copy or download.
Where the text comes from
Lorem ipsum is a scrambled passage from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a book on ethics Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The familiar version became common with Letraset dry-transfer sheets in the 1960s and later spread through desktop publishing software. It isn't proper Latin: words are cut and shuffled, which is exactly why it reads as texture rather than meaning.
This generator uses the 63 different words of the standard "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor..." passage and arranges them at random into sentences, adding a comma to some of them so they don't all read the same.
HTML output
With HTML on, the download is saved as lorem-ipsum.html; otherwise it's a plain .txt file.
- Paragraphs: each one wrapped in <p>...</p>, separated by a blank line.
- Sentences and words: one <p> around the whole block.
- List items: a <ul> with one <li> per item, indented and ready to paste into a page.
Getting more out of placeholder text
- Match the length of the real copy. If product descriptions will be around 40 words, generate 40 words, not three paragraphs. A layout that only works with the perfect amount of text will break as soon as real content arrives.
- Test the extremes too: one short list item, then 20 long ones, to see how menus and cards cope.
- Turn off the classic opening when you need several blocks that shouldn't all start with the same words, for example a grid of team member bios.
- Mark placeholder text clearly in your CMS so it isn't published by accident. A search for "lorem" before launch catches what slipped through.
Same settings, same text
The text isn't random each time the page loads. It's built from a version number, and the same version with the same settings always gives exactly the same words. New text moves on to the next version, and Back to the first version returns to version 1. That makes it easy to reproduce a screenshot or keep two mockups consistent.
Limits per click: up to 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences, 5,000 words or 200 list items. That's far more than a page layout needs, and it keeps the copy button quick.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does lorem ipsum mean?
Not much, on purpose. It's a jumbled passage from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum from 45 BC. "Dolorem ipsum" in the original means "pain itself", and the cut-off "lorem ipsum" means nothing at all.
Can I get exactly 50 words?
Yes. Choose Words and enter 50. You'll get exactly that many, starting with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" unless you turn that option off.
Can I get the text with HTML tags?
Yes. Tick Wrap in HTML tags. Paragraphs come in <p> tags and list items in a <ul> with <li> tags, and the download is saved as an .html file.
Why do I get the same text every time?
The generator is seeded, so version 1 with the same settings is always identical. Press New text to move to another version. The current version number is shown under the buttons.
Is it safe to leave lorem ipsum on a live site?
It's better not to. Search engines see pages full of placeholder text as thin content, and visitors read it as an unfinished site. Use it while designing and replace it before publishing.
How long is a generated paragraph?
Each paragraph has 4 to 8 sentences of 6 to 14 words, which works out at about 60 words on average. Single paragraphs can be noticeably shorter or longer, just like real writing.
Can I use the text in commercial work?
Yes. The words come from a Latin text more than 2,000 years old that nobody owns, and what this page generates is yours to use in any project, paid or not.
Does it start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"?
By default, yes: the first sentence is "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit." Turn off the option if you want the text to start with random words.
